TMJ, Headaches & Bite Dysfunction

When the Problem Is More Than Just Your Teeth

Many patients come to us after years of headaches, jaw tension, worn teeth or dental work that continually breaks down. Often, they have treated the symptoms repeatedly without ever being shown how their bite, muscles and jaw function may be connected.

At Applewhite Dental Arts, Dr. Pournik takes a comprehensive approach to TMJ and bite dysfunction that looks beyond individual teeth to understand how the entire system is functioning together. Before recommending treatment, we focus on identifying why problems are occurring in the first place — because long-term comfort and stability begin with proper diagnosis.

For some patients, the signs are obvious: jaw pain, clenching, popping or chronic headaches. For others, the symptoms appear more gradually through worn teeth, cracked restorations, facial tension or changes in the bite over time. In many cases, the underlying issue is not simply cosmetic. It is structural.

Understanding the Bite Before Rebuilding the Smile

Dr. Pournik’s philosophy is that dentistry should not only look beautiful — it should function comfortably and predictably for years to come. That is why bite analysis and jaw function play an important role in the way we evaluate cosmetic and restorative treatment.

Before rebuilding a smile, we use advanced digital diagnostics to study how the teeth, muscles and jaw joints actually function together. This may include 3D imaging, digital bite analysis, jaw tracking and neuromuscular diagnostics designed to reveal problems that traditional exams may miss.

Rather than guessing, we gather measurable information about how the bite moves, where pressure is being placed and whether muscle tension may be contributing to discomfort or instability.

For patients who have experienced years of wear, clenching or repeatedly failing dental work, this level of diagnosis can be an important part of creating more stable long-term outcomes.

The Connection Between TMJ, Worn Teeth & Headaches

Many people are surprised to learn how closely bite problems can affect the rest of the face and body.

When the bite is unstable, the muscles surrounding the jaw may compensate constantly throughout the day and night. Over time, this tension can contribute to headaches, facial soreness, neck discomfort, grinding and excessive wear on the teeth. In some patients, veneers, crowns or fillings may repeatedly chip or fail because the underlying bite imbalance was never addressed.

Dr. Pournik first evaluates whether the bite and surrounding muscles may be contributing to the patient’s symptoms before discussing treatment options.

For patients considering cosmetic or full-mouth treatment, this approach is especially important. Beautiful dentistry placed on an unstable bite may not age well. Our goal is to create smiles that are not only attractive, but comfortable and functional too.

TMJ, Airway & Sleep Screening

Because airway and sleep issues may sometimes overlap with clenching, grinding and muscle tension, our evaluations may also include screening for possible sleep-disordered breathing when appropriate. Patients can be provided with home sleep testing and referred to trusted medical specialists or ENT physicians if additional care is needed.

For patients who snore, oral appliances may also help reduce symptoms in certain cases.

Our goal is always to understand the larger picture of what may be contributing to a patient’s discomfort or dental breakdown — not simply treat isolated symptoms.

When Cosmetic Dentistry Requires More Than Cosmetics

Many patients initially seek cosmetic dentistry because they are unhappy with the appearance of worn, short or damaged teeth. But in some cases, the cosmetic problem is actually the result of years of bite imbalance, grinding or structural breakdown.

That is why Dr. Pournik frequently integrates bite analysis into smile rehabilitation and cosmetic treatment planning. By understanding how the bite functions first, we can often create results that feel more natural, stable and comfortable long term.

This comprehensive approach is one of the reasons patients travel to our office seeking more than traditional cosmetic dentistry alone.
